No iPhone is completely Waterproof, but several models are water-resistant. This means they can withstand certain levels of exposure to water.
Are iPhone’s waterproof? A few years ago Apple started advertising their phones as being “water resistant.” They also started including an “IP rating” in many of their devices specifications. But what does any of that actually mean, and most importantly, can you trust your phone in the water?
Is iphone Waterproof ?
No, iPhone’s are not waterproof, but they are water resistant and can withstand minor water damage.
Water-resistant or Waterproof
Water Resistant
If your device is water resistant, it means that it is very difficult for water to enter the phone. Many watches use this technology, in which even after a few splashes of water, the watch does not get damaged. Similarly, smartphones equipped with water resistance also do not suffer any damage if water drops fall on them. But this does not mean that you should make the mistake of putting your phone in water. Water resistant should not mean waterproof. Very few electronics are truly waterproof.
Water resistant phones use IP ratings for the device. Ratings range from one to nine in terms of water resistance. Nine is considered the best among these. Water resistance ratings are applicable only in certain conditions and are not found in the world. IP ratings are measured from one to nine based on experiments conducted in laboratories. Nonetheless, world environment conditions are quite different. For example, fresh water is used in laboratories, whereas water usually contains many types of salts and chemicals. These ratings can save the phone to some extent if it accidentally falls in a bucket. However, hardly anyone would recommend clicking photos inside a swimming pool.

Waterproof
Many smartphones come with waterproof certification, which means that the phone is safe in water. Not only this, this phone can also be used for photography under water.
So while buying a phone, check carefully which category your phone falls in. Is it waterproof, water resistant, or water repellent? Otherwise, there will be a big loss.

How to check iphone water-resistant ?
To check if your iPhone is water-resistant, you can follow these steps:
1. Check the Model and IP Rating:
- Look up the IP rating of your iPhone model. iPhones with IP67 or IP68 ratings are water-resistant.
- IP67: Water-resistant up to 1 meter for 30 minutes.
- IP68: Water-resistant up to 2 to 6 meters for 30 minutes (depending on the model).
- You can find the IP rating in your iPhone’s technical specifications on Apple’s official website.
2. Check in Settings:
- Go to Settings > General > About and find your iPhone model. Then, look up that model’s water-resistance rating online.
3. Check Apple’s Website:
- Visit Apple’s official iPhone page. Search for your iPhone model under technical specifications. Check if it is water-resistant and find the IP rating associated with it.
4. Refer to the User Manual:
- The user manual that comes with your iPhone typically includes information on water resistance and how to handle water exposure.
5. Identify Models that are Water-Resistant:
- Here are some common water-resistant iPhone models:
- iPhone 7 and later (e.g., iPhone 8, X, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15) are water-resistant to varying degrees.
What to do if your iPhone Gets Wet ?
If your iPhone gets wet, follow these steps to minimize the potential for damage:
1. Turn Off the iPhone Immediately:
- Power off your iPhone as soon as possible to prevent any short circuits.
- If your iPhone is already off, do not attempt to turn it on.
2. Remove the Case and Accessories:
- Take off any case, screen protector, or accessories to allow air to reach all parts of the phone.
- Disconnect any cables or headphones.
3. Wipe It Dry:
- Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth like a microfiber cloth. Gently wipe off the excess moisture from the surface of the phone.
- Pay attention to drying around ports, buttons, and speakers.
4. Shake Out the Water:
- Gently shake the phone to remove water from the ports (e.g., Lightning port, speakers).
- Avoid shaking it too aggressively.
5. Leave It to Dry:
- Let the iPhone air dry in a dry area with good airflow for at least 24–48 hours.
- Place the iPhone upright (with the Lightning port facing downward) to allow water to drain from the device.
6. Do NOT Use a Hairdryer or External Heat:
- Avoid using a hairdryer, microwave, or any external heat sources to dry your iPhone, as it may damage internal components.
7. Do NOT Insert Objects into Ports:
- Do not use cotton swabs, paper towels, or other objects to dry the inside of the ports. Doing so could push water further into the device.
8. Use Silica Gel Packets (Optional):
- If available, place your iPhone in a sealed bag with silica gel packets to help absorb moisture. Avoid using rice, as rice particles can get stuck in the ports and it’s not as effective as silica gel.
9. Wait Before Powering It On:
- Wait at least 24–48 hours before turning your iPhone back on to ensure it’s fully dry. If you see any condensation inside the camera lens or under the screen, wait longer.
10. Contact Apple Support (if needed):
- If your iPhone isn’t working properly after drying, contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store. Liquid damage is not covered under Apple’s warranty, but they may offer repair or replacement options.
- Water-resistant iPhones (like iPhone 7 and newer models) can usually handle brief splashes or submersion. However, they are not immune to liquid damage, especially over time.
- Apple’s warranty does not cover liquid damage, even if your iPhone is water-resistant.
